Travel around the world and back to ancient history as you experiment with traditional earth pigments used by artists for millennium. 

Pigments include:

  • Venetian Red - widely found in nature, it is almost completely composed of ferric oxide (iron) and was used extensively in Renaissance painting. Country of Origin: Italy.

  • Cyprus Green - occurs in abundance on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. It was used liberally by Roman artist in classical times. Country of Origin: Cyprus.

  • Burnt Umber - made of iron and manganese oxide.  Its name is derived from the Italian "terra d' ombre", " the earth of Umbria." Country of Origin: Italy.

  • Vine Black - produced by heating and charring grape vines and stalks, then pulverizing the pure carbon remains.  It has been used as a pigment since ancient times. Country of Origin: Italy.

  • Slate - made primarily from calcium and manganese carbonate. It is UV-permanent and color stable. Country of Origin: France.

  • Ochre - a warm earthy shade of yellow found in many locations around the world and in various shades of light to dark. Widely used by artists, the oldest known use dates back to almost 300,000 years. Country of Origin: USA.

Directions:  Add enough water to create the paint consistency you desire, from thin watercolor washes to opaque tempera paint for one sitting, store excess in the fridge for up to a week.
